The Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (FIBK UMP) is one of the first literature faculties established in the western part of Central Java. It was founded on July 13, 2000, along with the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Law. The Faculty received its “Registered” status through a decree from the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 226/Dikti/Kep/2000 dated July 13, 2000. Currently, it holds a “Very Good” accreditation status from BAN-PT (Decree No. 14086/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PPJ/S/II/2022).
At present, FIBK offers one flagship program: the Undergraduate English Literature Program (S1). The faculty’s vision and mission focus on becoming an excellent and Islamic institution in the fields of language, literature, and translation, with applications that nurture Islamic entrepreneurship among graduates. The curriculum emphasizes linguistics, literature, and translation, based on the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), integrating national education, workforce training, and assessment systems to produce high-quality, productive human resources.
To support this, the Faculty of Literature employs professional lecturers with Master’s and Doctoral degrees from both domestic and international institutions, specializing in Literature, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Translation Studies, and Education.
The faculty also provides excellent, safe, and representative facilities, creating a strong academic environment. Facilities include comfortable lecture rooms, a state-of-the-art translation lab, reliable communication and internet technology, a representative library, and well-managed student activity units. The green and strategic environment of Purwokerto enhances the learning and cultural experience.
To foster international academic partnerships, the faculty regularly holds the International Conference on the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (COTEFL) and the International Seminar on Literature and Linguistics (ISOLLING), where researchers, lecturers, and students from across the globe present their studies.
The faculty maintains active collaboration with both domestic and international institutions. Local partnerships support student internship programs and include institutions such as the Banyumas Regency Government, Satelit TV Purwokerto, SIP Publishing, Lion Air, Balai Bahasa, and others.
International collaborations include Pajama Press (Canada), Sofia University (Bulgaria), AIESEC Canada, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin Malaysia, Khon Kaen University (Thailand), University of South Australia, Ohio State University, and the National Institute of Education (Singapore). These partnerships cover visiting lectures, seminar speakers, journal reviewers, credit transfers, joint research, and publications.
